Sheriff was an auction rescue on January 29th of 2021, but not how they usually come about. He was already owned by a kill buyer and was sitting with his head down in one of the far back pens, set aside from the horses awaiting their turn in the ring. His fate was already sealed, meaning he was one that would be "straight loaded" to slaughter. His time was up. He would not be resold at auction. He was to be shipped to the border for meat. We recognized he was a Standardbred as soon as we laid eyes on him (our major weakness!), and there was no way we could leave him behind. We immediately found the kill buyer who owned him and offered to pay for him in full right then and there. The check was signed, and this handsome boy was loaded onto our trailer. Safe.
He had a severe limp, noticeable from the moment we led him away from the pens. But he deserved his second chance. There was something about his gentle, quiet demeanor and soft eyes that made us fall in love with him immediately. He was then and still is something special. We had him worked over by the chiropractor and after an initial vet examination, it was determined he had the arthritis of a 30 year old... at only 9 years old. His years with the Amish being used as a buggy and work horse left more than a little wear and tear on his body.
After some time in the pasture to decompress and heal, he became more and more lively. Quality of life is of the utmost importance to us and if he wasn't comfortable in the pasture, we would make a tough call... but Sheriff showed us quickly that he has so much left to give. Although he has some days of soreness with weather changes or the like, his personality came out through his playfulness daily. This character of a horse kicks up his heels any chance he gets!
We are now in the process of exploring options with the vet to continue helping the inflammation in his joints to be minimal. All this boy wants is to be loved and to constantly be in your back pocket! He's the kind of horse you never have to halter to catch. One hand under his chin and he'll stay by your shoulder no matter where you lead him. You would never know he had been through hell and back again... he is the sweetest, most forgiving horse. He is so eager to please. Despite not being fully sound for extensive work any longer, the amount of heart and soul he gives is unmatched.
